The Woman Behind the Work
Yovanka Bien-Aimé.
There’s a thin line between who you think you are and who you were meant to be… I’ve spent mine learning the difference.
Yovanka Bien-Aimé
The Beginning

I grew up at 1439 Lincoln Place in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, between Utica and Rochester. That address carries more than a zip code for me. It holds grief, resilience, the particular kind of hunger that comes from watching people around you survive without ever quite getting to live. I learned early that the gap between surviving and becoming was real, and that crossing it would cost something.

What I didn't know then was that the crossing would also teach me everything worth knowing. I became an observer out of necessity, the kind of person who watches how things work before deciding how to move through them. I paid attention to what people left unspoken, to the systems underneath the surface, to what held and what fell apart. That habit of observation has never left me, and it's become the foundation of everything I've built.

Crown Heights made me. Not despite the grief attached to it, but because of it. I learned to grieve the life I never had, and I learned to grieve the sacrifices it would take to get to where I knew I could be. That kind of grieving, when you let yourself actually do it, has a way of clearing the path forward.

The Pivot

I started college in Biology. Not because I wasn't capable, but because it was the expected direction, the kind of path that made sense to people around you before you'd had enough time to figure out what made sense to you. I would have been a great doctor. I know that. But I also knew, honestly and practically, that I didn't yet have the tools or the support structure to get there. Making that call wasn't defeat. It was the first real decision I made entirely for myself.

I switched to Information Systems and Network Security, and something clicked. Technology spoke to me the way observation always had. It was precise, logical, and honest about its rules. I graduated cum laude, and I entered a world that immediately reminded me nothing is as straightforward as it looks on paper.

I came out of school into a recession and landed in the federal government. Salary, benefits, stability. I was supposed to be in IT. I wasn't. What followed were years of moving through departments, learning systems from the inside, watching how policy and process either held things together or quietly let them unravel. Seventeen years of that. And what I walked away with is something no degree program teaches you: when systems are built with intention, they protect people. When they aren't, everyone feels it, especially the ones closest to the ground.

During those years I earned my MPA, and I made Yovi's Beauty Beats official. One gave language to what I already knew. The other gave me somewhere to put what I felt.

Experience teaches you how things actually work. Accreditation gives you the language to say it out loud.
The Work — Beauty

In 2010, one of the most beautiful women I have ever known died of cancer. Her name was Gabrielle, and she saved me in more ways than I will ever fully be able to count. Watching what chemotherapy and radiation did to her body and her spirit in real time was one of the most formative experiences of my life. It changed how I see beauty entirely. Not as vanity, not as performance, but as something much closer to dignity.

Yovi's Beauty Beats was born from her. Every face I've touched since carries something of her spirit in it.

I love women. That is really what this has always been about. Over a decade later, I've worked with women at every stage of life, from four years old to ninety-one. I've sat with people at their most vulnerable and had the privilege of sending them back out into the world feeling fully themselves. That requires more than skill. It requires presence, care, and the kind of intention you can't fake. The work has never been about transformation. It has always been about an energetic exchange. People don't need to be changed. They need to be seen and felt correctly.

Beauty, at its truest, is an act of witness.
The Work — Consulting

My consulting clients arrive already full. Full of vision, full of years spent circling the idea, full of a spark they can feel but haven't been able to move through on their own. What they need isn't more ideas. It's someone who can feel what they feel and actually knows how to build the structure around it.

I know this work from the inside. I have lived in the gap between seeing something clearly and not having the support to make it real. I stayed in that gap longer than I needed to, and I understand exactly what it costs. That understanding is the difference between consulting from theory and consulting from experience.

My approach is custom by design. I call it the atelier model because I believe good work, whether it's a business plan or a look, should fit the person it was made for. Nothing off the rack. Everything built to the individual in front of me, with the same precision and care I bring to every other thing I do.

Most people stay in the gap. I don't, and I don't let my clients stay there either.
The Standard

I have spent a long time giving my energy freely, and generously, and often to people and situations that weren't built to hold it. That season is over. What I offer now comes with a standard that reflects the full weight of what it took to get here: the years, the grief, the pivots, the late decisions that turned out to be exactly right.

I am not like the rest, and I stopped pretending otherwise. The work I do, in beauty and in business, is the kind that stays with people. It changes the way they see themselves. That doesn't happen by accident, and it doesn't come cheap, not in price and not in effort. I bring everything I have to every client I take on, and I expect the same seriousness in return.

If you've made it to this page, something brought you here. I'd like to think it was more than curiosity.

I don't deliver what doesn't match my vision. Not in beauty. Not in business. That's the standard, and it has always been.
